The 17th Drum Festival ”Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam” opens today in Havana with a show with the best Cuba’s percussionists.

The Mella Theater is the venue for the opening concert, in which drummers Samuel Formell, director of the legendary orchestra Los Van Van; and Rodney Barreto, instrumentalist of the group of maestro Jesús ‘Chucho’ Valdés, have confirmed their participation.

Percussionist Juan Carlos Rojas ‘El Peje’, and Mexican-American Antonio Sánchez, among other renowned musicians, are also on the list.

The event, to be run until March 11, is dedicated to Brazil, a country whose culture has an important influence on percussion as a musical expression.

The Drum Festival will also take place at the 31 y 2 Cultural Center at the Havana neighborhood of El Vedado, the Mella Theater’s Gardens, and the Tropical Brewery’s Salon Rosado ‘Benny More’, a worldwide famous dance floor in the island, where the major Cuban orchestras of popular dance music will perform on March 10-11.

The event evokes the memory of musician Guillermo Barreto, considered one of the major percussionists of all time in America.
