President Raul Castro congratulated his Venezuelan peer Hugo Chavez, who won the Sunday general election in the South American nation. 

In a message released by the island’s media, the Cuban statesman, on behalf of his government and people, congratulated Chavez for the historic triumph, thus proving the strength of the Bolivarian Revolution and its unquestionable popular support.

Your decisive victory ensures the continuity of the struggle for the genuine integration of our America, I reiterate our unwavering solidarity and support, the Cuban president said.

Chavez won re-election with 54.42 percent of votes, while his main opponent, Henrique Capriles, scored 44.9 percent, National Electoral Council president Tibisay Lucena said.
