U.S. President Donald Trump declared this Monday that his decision to ban CNN, MS NOW—formerly MSNBC—and Politico from accessing the White House does not constitute an attack on the free press.
“The White House is not carrying out an attack on the free press, which is something I appreciate. It is carrying out an attack on fake news, something that has grown like a cancer in our beloved United States of America,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The president described that trend as “something corrupt, deliberate, widespread, totally coordinated, and completely out of control.” “It is a threat to our national security and must be stopped right now,” he demanded.
Last Friday, Trump announced that he was vetoing “with immediate effect” access for representatives of the three outlets to the White House, accusing them of constantly spreading “fake news.”
“The media should not be able to constantly write or report fiction and lies when covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States,” he said at the time.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the ban came shortly after Natalie Harp, one of his closest advisors, showed him videos of journalists from those outlets criticizing his Administration. The newspaper notes that, although Trump has objected publicly and privately to media coverage of his presidency for months, his frustrations reached a boiling point on Friday. Hours later, he banned the network and two other news organizations from entering.
For his part, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov considered the veto an internal U.S. matter. “We work with all journalists. It is not our custom to do so. As for how Americans work with their own, it is their business; we do not meddle in that, and we do not like it when they meddle in our affairs,” he stated.
