During their stay, the Russian seamen will carry out a program of activities, which includes courtesy meetings with the head of the Revolutionary War Navy and the Governor of Havana; they will also visit places of historical and cultural interest.
The Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba announced that upon arrival of the detachment, 21 salvos would be fired from one of the ships, which would be reciprocated by an artillery battery from the San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress.
The naval group consists of the Admiral Gorshkov frigate, the K-561 Kazan nuclear-powered submarine, the Pashin fleet oil tanker, and the Nikolai Chiker rescue tug.
According to the notification, the visit “corresponds with the historical friendly relations between Cuba and Russia”, under “the international regulations of which Cuba is a State Party.”
Visits by naval units from other countries are a historical practice of the Cuban government with the nations with which it maintains relations of friendship and cooperation, the statement says.
