Sancti Spiritus Gallos score and continue to lead baseball series

The Gallos from Sancti Spíritus defeated the Leñadores of Las Tunas by a score of 4-2 on Thursday and remain the lone leaders, with 40 wins, in the XXI National Baseball Series of Cuba (SNB), on the closing day of the 27th sub-series of the competition

With the scenario at the Julio Antonio Mella stadium, the visitors from Espiritu avoided the sweep, after losing on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The winner of the game was the starter Yasel Luis Labrada (7-3), who in seven innings allowed the two runs of the Tuneros, allowed eight hits and struck out four batters, the point for game saved went to Yankiel Mauri (7).

Sancti Spíritus opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning and got another in the third, while the hosts scored one in the bottom of the first inning and another in the second.

The Gallos racked up seven hits, including a home run by Carlos Gómez, who batted 5-1 and drove in three runs in the challenge, in which his teammate Moisés Esquerres also stood out with 3-2 and a run batted in.

A total of three defensive errors were committed, one by the Espirituans and two by the Tuneros, who managed nine hits.

With this defeat, the Tuneros fell to third place in the standings, two games behind the leader, and the Tigres de Ciego de Avila remained in second place, one game behind the leader.

The Avileños broke a string of six consecutive losses by beating the Toros de Camagüey 7-5, out of the eight-team qualifying zone, in thirteenth place.

The tiger Alfredo Fadraga stood out in the success, with his 20th home run, and contributed in avoiding the sweep of the Camagüeyans.

Although they could not achieve the victory against the Villaclareños, the Cocodrilos de Matanzas remained in the classification zone, in the eighth place, but hugged by the Azucareros de Villa Clara, the Vegueros de Pinar del Río and the Piratas de la Isla de la Juventud.

Matanzas lost 3-5 to Villa Clara, Pinar del Rio defeated the Leones de Industriales 7-3 and Isla de la Juventud beat the Cazadores de Artemisa, with a 3-2 victory.

In the remaining games on Thursday, the Huracanes de Mayabeque beat the Elefantes de Cienfuegos 5-4, the Alazanes de Granma defeated the Avispas de Santiago 5-1, and the Cachorros de Holguín knocked out the Indios de Guantánamo 16-1 in seven innings.
