Some 2141 areas for nominating candidates for the elections next October have been enabled in the 696 constituencies in Sancti Spiritus, prior to a key moment in the Cuba’s democratic system in which residents from the central Cuban province are to decide who will represent them in the Municipal Assemblies of the People’s Power over the two and a half upcoming years.

According to Margarita Pasaron, secretary of the Provincial Electoral Commission, the work is currently addressed to closing the schedule of these meetings, programmed from September 3 to 29, where people have the power to propose and nominate candidates.

As established by the Electoral Act, these assemblies are organized, directed and chaired by the corresponding Constituencies Election Commissions, while the neighbors, in each area, may appoint whom they consider should represent them, always on the basis of their strengths, capabilities and merits. Moreover, candidates are nominated by areas, each area may nominate a single candidate and among those proposed the one with the most votes becomes the nominee.

For each of the boundaries, eight nomination meetings may take place as peak, taking into consideration the number of inhabitants, while the amount to apply is set between two and eight people with conditions to become elected as delegates to the election called for October.

The nearby nomination assemblies should become a neighborhood event to ensure mass participation of residents in a true exercise of democracy, as it is set by the Cuban political system, which guarantees that the people are the main character, exercising real power, while incorporating society in an authentic way of decision-making.
