The Institute for the Study of the Americas in Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina, will host two forums October 24th focusing on the Cuban anti-terrorist fighters held in US jails since 1998.
The failure of the U.S. justice system in the case of the Cuban anti-terrorists is the primary topic on the agenda.
Lecturers will include activist and actor Danny Glover; Miami-based lawyer William Norris; Professor Jane Kirtley from the University of Minnesota; the director of the Institute for the Study of the Americas at the University of North Carolina, Louis Perez and Professor Deborah Weissman, and the coordinator of the Solidarity Committee with the Cuban Five, Gloria La Riva.
Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino, internationally known as the Cuban Five, were arrested in 1998 after they monitored Miami-based terrorist organizations. Rene Gonzalez served a 13-year prison sentence and achieved the modification of his parole in exchange for renouncing his U.S. citizenship and returning to Cuba. The other four men are still held in U.S. prisons.
