The President of the Cuban Friendship Institute Kenia Serrano said the activity of movements of solidarity with Cuba during this year 2011 was extraordinary and is on the rise. Serrano mentioned as a particular fact the increase in 2011 of the efficiency of actions for the release of the Cuban Five with supporting committees expanded to 113 countries.
“This has been a year in which the Cuban people has received an overwhelming support from the peoples of the world”, Serrano stated, noting that the solidarity with Cuba has been active in more than 150 countries where mobilization actions have taken place, articles in support of the Cuban causes have been published in both official and alternative media, and an increasing number of people, particularly the young, is joining those efforts.
ICAP’s President mentioned as a particular fact the increase in 2011 of the efficiency of actions for the release of the Cuban Five with supporting committees expanded to 113 countries.
Likewise this year, she explained- people from 65 countries have traveled to Cuba through ICAP as members of solidarity-with-Cuba brigades, social groups, high-profile delegations; and also unionists and religious personalities.
In defiance of the US economic blockade against Cuba, the 22nd Pastors for Peace Friendshipment Caravan reached the island once again this year; as well as the 42nd Venceremos brigade and the 20th Juan Rius Rivera Brigade of Puerto Rico, the largest one of all with 130 members, Serrano noted.
On May Day, 1,147 friends from 43 nations coincided in Cuba, a record number for the first half of the year, motivated by the outcomes of the Sixth Congress of the Cuban Communist Party.
For 2012, the Institute is planning to make a turn in the fight for the return of the Cuban Five to the island with the strengthening of actions targeting the US public opinion.
