If confirmed by the Senate, Haspel would take over from Mike Pompeo, appointed to be the next Secretary of State, replacing dismissed Rex Tillerson
Gina Haspel, proposed today by US President Donald Trump to head the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), was linked to tortures of prisoners detained by the United States, a human rights organization denounced.
If confirmed by the Senate, Haspel would take over from Mike Pompeo, appointed to be the next Secretary of State, replacing dismissed Rex Tillerson.
‘The current deputy director of the CIA (Haspel) was a central figure in one of the most illegal and shameful chapters in modern US history, Christopher Anders, deputy director of the legislative office of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), said in a statement.
According to the entity, Haspel was in charge of a secret center for such practices in Thailand and of ordering to cover up related crimes by eliminating videotapes.
A prisoner in the facility was subjected to asphyxiation with water 83 times, beaten against the walls, deprived of sleep and locked in a box similar to a coffin, the source said.
It added that after being promoted to the headquarters of the CIA, Haspel worked to destroy the evidence of the crimes committed in the prison under her command.
