Cuban Artists Tell What was Hidden in Supposed Performance

The National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) rejected an alleged ”performance” called for today by the creator Tania Bruguera, calling it a political provocation.

The main body of the Cuban intellectuals accused Bruguera of seeking circumstantial prominence with a project outside any institution, amplified by circles opposed to the Revolution.

The artist, 46 years old, intends to install an open microphone in the Revolution Square, in a sort of open platform that seems counterproductive at the actual circumstances.

On December 17, the governments of Cuba and the United States announced the start of negotiations to restore ties interrupted for long time, process that motivates expectations in both countries.

Uneac and other sources consulted by Prensa Latina agree that the purpose of Bruguera is muddying the process, affecting many who thrive at the expense of the dispute.

According to the text of the Uneac, this ‘performance’ will only be supported ‘by the few local mercenaries of the policy that the President (Barack) Obama himself has considered unsuccessful’.

‘We are not naive’, warns the statement of the Cuban intellectuals, aware of the political will of a famous artist in her search for circumstantial prominence.

In various international stages her work has been ethically challenged; thanks to extremes like offering cocaine to the public in Bogotá or playing Russian roulette at a conference in Venice.

Her current proposal had its antecedent in the X Havana Biennale 2009, when her work Tatlin’s Whisper tried to create a media event that was used by recognized enemies of the revolution.

For now, the call of Bruguera has gone unnoticed in Havana and the rest of Cuba, where concerts and initiatives to celebrate the New Year and the 56 anniversary of the triumph of the Revolution already began.
