Most of the family doctors’ clinics that exist in Sancti Spiritus are run by physicians and nursing graduates. This ensures community medical coverage in the eight municipalities of the province.
According to statement by Mirta Santos, head of the Department of Primary Health Care (APS, in Spanish) in the territory, health care services in the community have been strengthened with over 100 physician recently graduated from Sancti Spiritus’s University of Medical Sciences.
Most of these medical practitioners were sent to work in clinics found in remote Plan Turquino areas, added Santos, who also referred to the repairs so far carried out in almost a hundred family doctors’ clinics.
The family doctor program was born in Cuba in 1984, as suggested by Fidel Castro, in order to bring sanitary services closer to the people, thus improving the health condition of the whole population.
