The Nursing service of Sancti Spiritus Hospital Surgical Unit is as anonymous as essential in all the operations performed in the facility. In every room, including those of maternity, they assume multiple procedures.

“I used to work in the surgery ward, but since I came here in 2002, I requested a transfer because I like the room, it is the heart of the hospital, we saved lives here and we are all important,” says Ignacio Perez, one of the most outstanding Nursing graduates.
But that important list is filled with other colleagues who make their profession worth of acknowledgment: Ivis Diaz, Marlene Guerra, Digna Jimenez, Martha Bastida, Alina Farinas and Olaya Diaz, among many others. The anonymity of their task is no obstacle for their great performance.
“Nurses are essential in the team, they bear tremendous responsibility, they have multiple functions before, during and after surgery; they even need to ensure there are no dressings, or instruments inside the patient. In general they are very disciplined and skillful, they receive special training before starting in the rooms and they are asked to look for alternatives to face the possible difficulties that might come up, “summarizes Dr. Javier Garcia, chief of the Surgical Services Unit.
What weaknesses or deficiencies still affect the work of nurses?
“Nurses need to continue beating themselves; however the difficulties do not depend on them, but on the importance to improve their own living and working conditions: they have to face shortages, from food to material limitations to function properly. But they effort every day, nurses are the first to arrive and the last to leave. “
