For over two hours workers from the central Cuban province of Sancti Spiritus marched to ratify their support to the 6th Congress of the Cuban Communist Party. The commemoration was presided over by Misael Enamorado, member of the Central Committee Secretariat and Ernesto Guevara´s daughter Aleida. May Day parade started once the national anthem was played and the general secretary of the Cuban Trade Union (CTC) in the territory addressed the participants in the rally.

The march was led here by the workers from the educational trade union who are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the illiteracy campaign in the island

Most parade people were dressed in red, white and blue, the colors of the Cuban flag. They also held bills and carried posters with messages demanding justice and freedom for the five Cubans kept in US jails.

This year’s May Day commemoration pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Bay of Pigs victory over the US-led invasion, the declaration of the socialist character of the Cuban Revolution and the epic illiteracy campaign.

Similar parades were held in the other seven municipalities of the province. Likewise workers and residents from 34 of the largest local communities attended rallies and other activities to mark the working class event.
