An important archaeological finding was recently made at the mouth of the Yayabo River, Sancti Spiritus, which confirms the presence in the area of aboriginal agriculture-ceramist groups from the 16th century.

According to engineer Orlando Alvarez de la Paz, head of the Archeology Department of the Office of Monuments and Historical Sites in the territory, traces of materials brought by the Europeans in the first moments of the conquest and colonization of the indigenous populations of this region of Cuba, were also found.

The most important element discovered was an iron spear point, the only one of its kind so far found within the conext of the sixteenth century in this central Cuban region. Likewise, fragments of majolica, pieces of burén (clay disc where the cassava was cooked and the meats roasted), two horseshoes, and some nails, among other objects, also cropped out in the site.

According to specialists involved, these revelations coincide with the old hypothesis of historians concerning the cartographical location of the founding point of Sancti Spíritus.
