Hurricane Sandy Affects Sancti Spiritus, Cuba (+photos)

Despite no incident was reported here while Sandy hit the Cuban eastern provinces, heavy rains have been falling in Sancti Spiritus since early this Friday morning. That’s why, huge amounts of water dripped into the rivers. Civil Defense authorities decided to close the local central highway, and to activate all corresponding mechanisms for the protection

Despite no incident was reported here while Sandy hit the Cuban eastern provinces, heavy rains have been falling in Sancti Spiritus since early this Friday morning. That’s why, huge amounts of water dripped into the rivers.

Civil Defense authorities decided to close the local central highway, and to activate all corresponding mechanisms for the protection of human lives, as well as economic resources.

According to local sources, precipitations was recorded over 100mm in 17 locations, with the highest accumulations in Yaguajay’s Aridanes dam (231), and Cabaiguan’s Minas de Jarahueca (222).

Water level got a rise in local Agabama, Tuinucu, and Zaza rivers, while Zaza dam received over 88 000 000m³. This made it necessary to put the Cayajana overflow channel into fuction.
