An important budget was earmarked this year for the capital restoration of a nursing institution for mentally handicapped in the central Cuban province of Sancti Spiritus.

According to Dr. Migdrey Aragon Castro, head of the institution, the renovation tasks implies an improvement in the quality of life and the opportunities available for the patients.

Dr. Aragon explained that despite the institution was opened to assist only people from this province, some patients from nearby territories have been admitted.

Admittance age ranges from five to eight years, although older persons are exceptionally accepted. Most of the times these patients stay here for long, added the doctor.

Eighteen of the patients live in the institution but the other 107 go home on leave every seven, fifteen or thirty days, according to their limitations, she concluded.
