In a statement, the Revolutionary Government affirmed that the U.S. determination to continue NATO’s progressive expansion towards the borders of the Russian Federation has led to a scenario with implications of unpredictable scope, which could have been avoided.
The text also pointed out that it is not possible to rigorously and honestly examine the current situation in Ukraine without carefully assessing Russia’s fair claims to the U.S. and NATO and the factors that have led to the use of force and the non-observance of legal principles and international norms that Cuba subscribes to and supports.
After reiterating its respect for international law and commitment to the UN Charter, The Cuban government deeply regretted the loss of innocent civilian lives in Ukraine. It recalled that the Cuban people have had and continue to have a close relationship with the Ukrainian people.
The statement underlined that it was a mistake to ignore Russia’s well-founded claims for security guarantees and to assume that Russia would remain idle in the face of a direct threat to its national security.
“Russia has the right to defend itself. It is not possible to achieve peace by encircling and cornering states,” the text stated.
The statement of the Revolutionary Government concluded by calling for a serious, constructive, and realistic diplomatic solution to the current crisis in Europe by peaceful means, which would ensure the security and sovereignty of all and regional and international peace, stability, and security.
