The prizes will be presented next March 14th, during the provincial event to commemorate the foundation anniversary of the Patria newspaper by José Martí
The Provincial Delegation of the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC) in Sancti Spíritus granted the Tomás Alvarez de los Ríos Life’s Work Award to Mayra Pardillo Gómez, in recognition to her outstanding career of more than 35 years.
She’s been working for the Prensa Latina News Agency for over decades now, including missions in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Nicaragua and Mexico. She had previously worked for Cinco de Septiembre and Escambray provincial newspapers, as well as for the Verde Olivo Magazine, on behalf of which she was a war correspondent in Angola from 1984 to 1985.
Mayra has been published in different books. In addition, she was awarded the Internationalist Worker Medal, the Raúl Gómez García and Félix Elmuza awards, and the Second Degree Friendship Order, conferred by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
The jury also recognized the life work of journalists Delia Rosa Proenza Barzaga from Escambray, and Arelys García Acosta, from Radio Sancti Spíritus.
In the context of the activities for the Cuban Press Day, the “Honorio Muñoz” awards for the work of the year were also granted. These prizes were given to Elsa Ramos (radio), Yenis Fleites (television), José Luis Camellón (written press), Vicente Brito and Oscar Alfonso (graphic journalism), and to Mirelys Rodríguez in the digital journalism category, in which Arelys García received a mention.
