Army General Raúl Castro, first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) and Miguel Díaz-Canel, president of the Councils of State and Ministers, presided over the national ceremony to mark the 65th anniversary of the assault on Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks in Santiago de Cuba and Bayamo, respectively.
The National Rebellion Day commemoration was also attended by the major national and local leaders of the Party, the government and the grassroots organizations.
In the Ciudad Escolar 26 de Julio, former Moncada Garrison, nearly ten thousand local residents gathered, including participants in both assaults, members of the Granma Yatch expedition, and combatants of the underground fight and the Rebel Army.
Representatives of the Juan Rius Rivera (Puerto Rico) and Jose Marti (Europe) solidarity brigades, who are currently visiting the eastern Cuban city, were also present in the rally.
Santiago de Cuba was chosen as venue of the commemoration not only because of its history, but also because of its many socio-economic achievements which have improved the quality of life of the people.
