Juan Carlos Obregon, Ermes Espinosa and Isan Ortiz won the three medals for Cuba in the 2018 Valladolid Open Chess Tournament held in the Mexican city of Mazatlan.

The first two of them finished tied with six points out of possible seven, but Obregon had better tiebreaker while Ortiz ranked third with 5.5 units.Nevertheless, Espinoza added 12.9 units to his ELO coefficient, biggest amount among the three medalists.

Cuban female athlete Yuleisy Hernandez also had an excellent performance when finishing 16th with 4.5 units and only two losses to men with much higher rank.
