Mrs. Biden is accompanied by Catherine Russell, US
ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues and Evan Ryan, assistant secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs
It’s going to be a great trip, announced Doctor Jill Biden, a U.S. pedagogue with more than three decades of experience, in an article published on Thursday in Medium, while referring to the visit to
the island she began in the afternoon of October 6.
Josefina Vidal, director general of the United States Department of the Cuban Foreign Ministry, received Doctor Biden at Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport.
The U.S. delegation is composed of Catherine Russell, U.S.
ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues and Evan Ryan, assistant secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Biden pointed out in her blog on the Medium network that her trip takes place shortly after the passage of Hurricane Matthew though Cuba and the Caribbean, and said she was admired by the way citizens and leaders in the region are working together to minimize impacts and guarantee a speedy recovery.
An English language university professor for three decades and with a PhD in Pedagogy, she declared that she travels to Cuba interested in taking a closer look at Cuban education, health and culture.
As a lifetime educator, one of my favorite things is to meet with
students and professors, she pointed out, and expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to visit schools in Cuba, listen to students and talk to teachers about the important role they play in the lives of their students and the community.
In the article she also shared through her account in Twitter, she
welcomed the friendly football game that will take place on Friday between the national teams of her country and Cuba, for the first time in almost 70 years.
During her stay, the wife of the Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, and her accompanying delegation, will meet with representatives of the government to hold exchanges related to culture, education and health, and will tour places of historic interest and educational centers.
The visit takes place in the context of the process towards the
normalization of relations between the two countries after the
reestablishment of diplomatic ties and scarcely six months after the visit of President Barack Obama with his family and a wide representation of his administration.
