Orlando Lugo Fonte passed aways this Monday morning in Havana, at the age of 81, victim of a sudden cardiovascular condition
He was born in San Luis, Pinar del Río, was a member of the 26th of July Movement, and joined the Rebel Army in 1959.
Since 1962 he held various positions at the party leadership of his native province, where he became president of the Provincial Assembly of People’s Power in 1976. In 1983, he was chosen as First Secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Party in that territory, responsibility he held until 1987.
Later on, at the 7th Congress of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP, in Spanish), he was elected President of the organization at the national level and was ratified in this position at the VIII, IX and X Congresses. He was currently an advisor at the AZCUBA business group.
He was founder member of the Cuban Communist Party. He was a delegate to the first six congresses of this political organization, being elected alternate member of its Central Committee in the II Congress and member of that committee in the III, IV, V and VI Congresses. He was elected member of the National Assembly of People’s Power (Parliament) in 1976, position in which he was ratified in 1981 and 1986. Also in 1986 he was chosen member of the Council of State.
