After the heavy rainfall reported in Sancti Spiritus this Sunday, the water volume at the local Zaza dam went up to 940 000 000m³. That’s why, it was decided to open four of the six floodgates at the Cayajana overflow channel.
Due to the heavy rainfall reported in Sancti Spiritus this Sunday afternoon, the water volume at the local Zaza dam went up to 940 000 000m³, which is beyond the established 920 million cubic meter level of hydrological precaution. Thus, it was decided to open four of the six floodgates at the Cayajana overflow channel.
Between Sunday afternoon and Monday 7:00 A.M., the reservoir received 50 000 000m³ of water, mostly derived from the heavy rains fallen in several areas of the basin of the dam.
Although tropical storm Isaac is already far away from Sancti Spiritus, the rain impact continues to be strictly watched here, so as to prevent flooding risks.
According to Water Resources Delegate in the territory Leonel Díaz Hernández, the opening of the overflow channel must gradually compensate the dam condition, and extra water volumes will be released. He added that Isaac-derived rains improved water stocks in the territory, where other five reservoirs are now running.
Significant accumulations of rain were recorded from Sunday 8:00 A.M. Monday 2:00 A.M. in El Saltadero (almost 147 mm), Topes de Collantes (122) and the area around Yayabo River (114).
