With two wins and three defeats, Sancti Spiritus junior baseball team finished in the fourth place in the final stage held in their own headquarters, a bad result taking into consideration last year’s second position.
Sancti Spiritus best appearances occured in the last two games with great performance of their pitchers, mostly of Yosbel Gonzalez, responsible for the victory over Santiago de Cuba and Carlos Sierra, who took the win over Camaguey 6×4.
The defeats in the first three games of the final evidence the poor offensive of the team vs. Havana, Matanzas and Granma, with negative scores of 10-0, 6-0 and 2-1, respectively.
The gold medal in this 48th version of the classic went for Matanzas, with balance of four wins and one loss, followed by Havana and Camaguey, both with three wins and two defeats.
Fourth positioned in the standings were Sancti Spiritus (2-3), then Santiago de Cuba (2-3), and Granma, which managed a single win and yielded to their rivals four times.
Last year Havana took over the crown, while silver was retained by Sancti Spiritus and the bronze went to Pinar del Rio, absent this time of the final round.
In this category (up to 18 years), earlier joys for Sancti Spiritus came in 2000 with bronze, and in 2001 (silver), when renowned Lourdes Gourriel was manager of the team..
