The 42nd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) began its sessions at a hotel in Cochabamba on Monday, a few hours after its inauguration, which was characterized by reforms and re-founding, demands.
The first plenary session started at 09:00 hours, local time, and would only allow access to camera people and photographers for the usual pictures.
Meanwhile, the statements made on Sunday by Bolivian President Evo Morales will resound in the atmosphere, as he calling for the re-founding or disappearance of such a regional body.
At the plenary session, Morales spoke shortly after OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, whose stance was just the opposite of the Assembly’s host.
While Insulza called for respect for the organization and highlighted the alleged benefits to the OAS countries, the Bolivian president railed against his words and demanded the re-foundation or disappearance of the OAS.
According to Morales, this is the best time for the reconstruction of the OAS, and it is not a time of cold war and the heads of state of the Americas are obliged to alter this regional organization.
At Monday’s session, the agenda included press conferences with the heads of visiting delegations and the possible arrival of Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, whose presence was reported in advance by Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño.
