Corneal transplantations have been resumed in Sancti Spiritus’s Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital, a service that was stopped here one year ago.
This surgical procedure, the cost of which varies from 6 000 to 10 000 dollars in developed capitalist countries, has been performed on 21 local patients since 2009, when the first operation of this kind was performed in this territory.
Sancti Spiritus is part of the National Program of Corneal Transplantations and is subordinated to the eye bank of Havana’s Ramon Pando Ferrer Ophthalmology Institute.
According to the head of the service in the institution, the transplantations have been quite successful and the survival of the grafting is high and the cornea clinic is equipped with the required state-of-the-art technology.
