The Cuban men’s team defeated its counterpart of Brazil 3-2 on Monday in the 2011 Volleyball World Cup and totaled its fifth victory with two defeats, while group-leaders Poland and Russia also won on this date.The match corresponding to the competition group B, at the city of Hamamatsu, finished with partials of 17-25, 25-22, 25-23, 20-25 and 15-12.
With this result, the Cubans tied in total victories and defeats with the Brazilians, who are defending champions, but they record more points than the Caribbean players, 16 by 14.
The Poles and Russians total 6-1 with 19 and 18 points, respectively.
Cubans Fernando Hernandez and Wilfredo Leon were the most outstanding attackers, who scored 22 and 16 points, in that order.
Captain Giba led the Brazilians in that area with 21.
The current stage, while having three games, will conclude tomorrow with matches between Poland-Egypt, Iran-China and Japan-United States, in group A; while in the B will clash: Cuba-Russia, Argentina, Brazil, Italy and Serbia.
The tournament will award three qualification slots for the 2012 Olympic Games of London.
