The exploits of Commander Camilo Cienfuegos (1932-1959) in the last stage of the Cuban liberation war had a great impact on the Solidarity Brigade Cruz del Sur, visiting Sancti Spiritus, in central Cuba.

When touring the hero’s memorial, in the northern municipality, Yaguajay, the members of the brigade get to know Camilo’s bravery when commanding Las Villas guerrilla while freeing this territory from Fulgencio Batista’s tyranny on the last day of December, 1958.

The Australian and New Zealander Solidarity Brigade Cruz del Sur arrived last Monday in Sancti Spiritus as part of a four-day visit to the province.

Jeronimo Besanguiz, director of the memorial, highlighted the life and work of one of the main figures of the Cuban revolution led by Fidel Castro.

Michael Flemming, Cruz del Sur member, said that their two-week visit in Cuba have allowed them to appreciate the reality of this country and get to know better Camilo Cienfuego’s life, a hero they had little information on.

After having met an intense agenda of tours to different historic and cultural places, the brigade will depart from Sancti Spiritus to continue visiting some other scenarios of the Cuban geography.
