Cuba celebrated this May 3rd the World Asthma Day with a variety of scientific activities. Sancti Spiritus, a central province in the island, held workshops on the epidemiology of asthma accordingly with the slogan “You can control your asthma” and encouraged patients to participate actively in handling their disease.

As part of the events to homage the World Asthma Day, workshops held in Sancti Spiritus, central Cuba, aim at providing professionals and patients with the necessary knowledge to deal with the disease affecting more than 300 million people in the world.

Due to its morbidity and mortality, asthma is considered the most important disease to which professionals draw their attention to in Sancti Spiritus province.

In Cuba, an 8-10% out of the total inhabitants is affected by asthma, with greater prevalence on infants.

World Asthma Day was established in 1998 and is held the first Tuesday of every May. The World Health Organization sponsors events in about 50 countries around the world to draw attention to this disease, which affects a large part of the global population.
